"Little Nikki" one tone whistle kitty - 8 3/4" L x 3 1/4" H X 1 1/2" W; Raku clay - greenware.
The pieces on this page are sculptures and "for-fun" creations that are not yet complete. Working with clay involves numerous steps and processes, from handbuilding, drying, bisque-firing, glazing and decorating to glaze or final firing.

"Proud Mother Kitty" Terra Cotta greenware, 4" L X 5 1/2" H X 2 1/8" W

"Proud Mother Kitty" after bisque. Kiln problems resulted in over-firing (Cone 1) of this terra cotta piece but, in person, she's a lovely rich brown color and can do without a glaze coat.

"Polar", 7" L X 2" W X 2 3/4" H. greenware bear made from terra cotta with 35% sawdust and coated with magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salts) so that "Polar" will be white when fired.

Catenary Cat - Terra Cotta and 30% paper (paperclay) greenware; 14" H X 7.2" L X 4" W

Catenary Cat - from the back. This figure has a distinctive arch and he's hollow from top to bottom. A "catenary" is a type of structural arch.

Catenary Cat from the left side.
Catenary Cat gets his head on straight. Yep, that's masking tape encircling his body. This step was part of the pre-forming used during Catenary Cat's construction.

Catenary Cat - bisque-fired; cold carnauba wax with oxides and clay patina.

"Scrappy" - howling wolf made from scrap terra cotta mixed with feline pine cat litter. Greenware.

The happy terra cotta clay family after bisque-firing. Left to right: Scrappy, Catenary Cat, The Sentinel, and Polar.

"Buffy" - front view

"Buffy" - side view

"Buffy" from the back
"Buffy" is made from Blue Clay indigenous to North Central Texas. The marly Blue Clay was collected from rock formations above the Trinity River at the Hulen & Bellaire access point, Tarrant County, Texas. Bisque-fired through Cone 05 (10460 C or 19140 F).

Body Cast: white stoneware paperclay (30%)

For the love of "Art" ...
... more fun with paperclay body casting...

Out of the mask. It took about 3 hours before the mask amd body cast were dry enough to remove.

Preliminary work on the mask from the cast begins with a base color of rutile, a ceramic oxide. More colors will be added before the greenware piece is ready for bisque. The tile on the right is called a test tile showing the tannish color of bisqued rutile (top).

Weed "Corsage": white stoneware paperclay greenware; 8 X12 X 3/4 inches; red copper oxide, illmenite, and stain. The red copper oxide will become black on faint green after bisque.

Snick-Snake - greenware but up and coming. Snick-Snake is made of white stoneware paperclay (35%) and has his underglaze oxide stains on and a few scales. He still needs a complete set of teeth and scales.

"Home" - this loving pair of Devon Rex kitties has been sculpted from white stoneware. The pair have been bisque-fired with Ferro and Pemco underglaze stains.
